The Second Deadly Sin: Christianity
(This continues our limited special series on the Seven Deadly Sins of Liberalism. The first column
was June 18, 2009.)
The left hates Christianity in its original form. Christianity has stood for two thousand years and
while splintered in its interpretation, the tenants have remained unchanged. It is the bedrock of modern
western civilization and the very being of our society in America. The United States was founded by
Christians as a Christian nation. That is undeniable by people who are honest and take the time to read
what our Founding Fathers wrote. What America isn't, is a theocracy. This is an important distinction
in understanding who we are and how the left is using that distinction to destroy the nation. America
was set up as a secular nation of Christian people with Christian principles. Even today, with the
relentless assault on Christianity for the past fifty years, America remains over 70% Christian.
Christian principles guide our culture, our laws, and our unparalleled generosity across the globe.
But what if you hate the nation with every fiber of your Marxist being? What if that freedom
flowing from Christian principles means a chaos that grits your teeth; because you are smarter than
everyone else and want to be in charge of everyone else? You then hate the principles America was
founded on. The left hates Christianity because it also hates America. America isn't possible without
Christianity. When you go after the nation, you also go after what makes it work. The left goes after
Christianity.
There are two ways of bringing down a citadel. The first is the assault from the outside. The
second is from the inside through treachery. The left has been pursuing the assault from both fronts.
From the inside has been the rise of the "Christian Left." An oxymoron phrase that seeks to use
Christianity as a tool to tear apart society rather than ennoble it. The Christian Left is all about social
justice and being inclusive, but very little about God and Christ. Many are secular and only use
Christianity as a tool when attacking what they believe Christianity represents. Have you heard "Who
are you to judge?" or "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone?" This is as deep as it gets. What
is always left out when a liberal uses this text as a weapon is the acknowledgement of sin and the "Go,
and sin no more." part. During the last presidential campaign a United States Congressman, Steve
Cohen (D, TN) actually got on the floor of the House and made the analogy that Obama and Christ
were equivalent because they were both "community organizers," while Palin and Pontius Pilate were
equivalent because they were both governors. The shallow understanding of Christianity from this
Democrat showed that he was absolutely willing to pimp the Son of God for Marxist goals at the drop
of a sound bite.
To the Christian left there is no such thing as sin other than private property, the right to life,
capitalism, and morality. The Christian left promotes gay marriage, alternative lifestyles, abortion, the
equality of all religions, the forced redistribution of wealth, no standards of morality, and no judgment
of behavior. Fine examples of these wolves in sheep's clothing would be former president Bill Clinton
(Hey, a governor, would you look at that! I wonder if he would get a pass from Congressman
Cohen?) present president Barack Obama, Bishop Gene Robinson, and the Reverends Jesse Jackson
and Al Sharpton.
When Bill Clinton was caught getting oral sex from a female employee young enough to be his
daughter, he grabbed a Bible (borrowed?) and got counseling from Jesse Jackson. The kicker is the
married 'Reverend' brought his mistress to these sessions (who would later go on to have his
illegitimate child.) As for the good homosexual Anglican Bishop, Rev. Robinson, the man is ardently
practicing and promoting sin while excusing it- by removing sodomy as a sin. See? No sin, then not a
sinner! It would be hard for the bishop to promote morality when immorality is his lifestyle. How do
you preach on fidelity, marriage, and the avoidance of sin when you seek to destroy marriage, the
family, and the nature of sin itself? The left does not want morality. It seeks to destroy the family as
the basic building block of society and replace it with the state. The left promotes sexual promiscuity,
the lack of need for the man in the family, the irrelevance of marriage, and the lack of humanity of
unborn children. The Christian Left, Marxists, whatever you want to call them, have infiltrated most
Christian denominations and are actively trying to tear down these institutions from the inside by
rewriting the very tenants of their faiths.
But Christianity is a revealed religion. In other words, God revealed it to man, and so there is no
alteration. If it is altered, it isn't Christianity any more. Then it becomes a man made religion. This is
the route taken with the "Christian Left." It may be a simulation, but it isn't Christianity any more,
which is what is intended. By being close enough, it becomes one more way to draw people away
from the revealed religion and replace it with the goals and purposes you want to provide. This is
where the "social justice" portion of Christianity creeps in. When the unions wanted to go after
Wal-Mart they used a Louisville preacher to ask if Jesus would shop at Wal-Mart. The implication
was that since Wal-Mart wasn't unionized, it was unacceptable to Christians. Christianity in the leftist
sense isn't a revealed religion anymore, it is a man made one-a sham. It is the Israelites' golden calf
they hammered out while Moses talked to God. They wanted a deity to serve their purposes. So does
the Christian Left.
Religion is just a tool Marxists use to further their aims. They do not respect it. When Christians
want to be exempted from prescribing abortion pills or performing abortions they are ridiculed and their
beliefs held in utter contempt. Any provisions to exempt them from the social policies of death are
routinely shot down by the left. There is no respect for Christian principles or obligations. There is no
respect for religious liberty. Christianity is simply useful at times to promote Marxism. If it can be
co-opted from the inside then, fine. If it cannot, well, then it will be suppressed.
The following is a prayer that opened the new session of the Kansas House of Representatives
January 23, 1996. It was presented on the floor by Reverend Joe Wright (No relation to the
"God-damn-America!" Barack Obama preacher of over 20 years.) and written by Reverend Russell of
Kentucky.
"Heavenly Father, we come before You today to ask Your forgiveness and seek Your direction and
guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe unto them that call evil good," but that's exactly what we
have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values.
We confess that:
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it pluralism;
We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism;
We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle;
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery;
We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation;
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare;
We have killed our unborn and called it choice;
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable;
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem;
We have abused power and called it political savvy;
We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition;
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression;
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, O God, and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some wicked way in us;
cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent
here by the people of Kansas, and who have been ordained by You, to govern this great state. Grant
them Your wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center of Your will. I ask in the
name of Your Son, the Living Savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen. "
There is not a single part of that Christian prayer that would meet with an endorsement from the
Christian left. There is not a single part of that prayer that would come from the Christian left.
The infiltration and corruption of Christianity is relatively new, although so far it has been highly
successful. It was not the original front on which the Marxists fought to destroy Christianity. They
started from the outside fighting openly against Christianity in government, in the press, and through
the culture of the media and Hollywood. How many times have you heard the line "the separation of
church and state." as a hallowed precept of our nation? The fact it is without foundation or merit is a
complete shock to people who can be made to think it through. There is no such thing. The line
comes from a personal letter from Thomas Jefferson and is taken completely out of context. There is
no foundation in our government for such division. In fact, Jefferson himself appropriated money
from the Federal treasury to support missionaries to the Indian nations. He regularly attended church
services in the House of Representatives while president. Do you think Jefferson read his own letter?
Here is what the Constitution, our contract which allows the government to operate, says about religion:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free
exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people
peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
So how do we, two hundred years later, now seek to suppress religion outside of church doors and
all expressions of religion outside of the home? How did this come about? Would you even dare to
bring a Bible to work? If you worked in a government office, would you put a crucifix in your cubicle?
How long do you think it would be before you were reprimanded or fired? Almost weekly in the news
there is the story of the ACLU soliciting people to be offended when they find a monument of the Ten
Commandments on public property, or a cross that can be found on public land. The courts have gone
from impartial arbiters of the Constitution to the document's and our nation's most dangerous foe.
As hostile as society has become in the courts and schools and legislature, the cultural assault is even
more blatant. Movies such as Maher's Religulous are current and blatant examples of an otherwise
pervasive attitude of hostility towards Christianity. How often have you seen a positive rendition of
Christianity on television, in the movies, or in the magazines and newspapers? Can you even
remember any? Instead, if you watch a television drama Catholic priests are always portrayed as
sexual predators, their bishops as oily politicians, and parishioners as uneducated sheep and victims.
Meanwhile the cynical investigators, lawyers, and judges are the atheistic and enlightened ones.
Protestant ministers are cast in several directions. The white ministers are usually intolerant, closet
Klansmen, abusers, or they are hustlers shearing the sheep of their flock for their cash- primarily the
elderly or the poor. If the minister is a minority, then they are usually sexually active with the choir
members, barely literate, or stealing the church funds.
There are positive role models of clergy in the culture of movies and TV, and every last one of them is
promoting the Marxist ideology the writers and producers adore. Want a sympathetic minister? He is
promoting illegal immigration. Want another one? He or she is preaching gay rights in the church. A
home run for what the left considers true Christianity would be a gay woman bishop fighting to adopt a
baby from a foreign country and being stopped by a hostile balding white male played by an actor
typically cast in villain roles. When was the last time you saw a Christian movie that was devoid of
Marxism or treated Christianity reverently? Bing Crosby in Going My Way? or The Bells of St.
Mary's?
The only one that comes to mind is Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. What a fight he had to
get that movie made. No one would back him. No one would produce it. No one would distribute it.
Hollywood hated it. Hollywood hated him. The press hated him. They hate him still. The film was a
wild success. He made boatloads of money because he did it all himself. This upset the cultural left
even more.
When Mel turned out to be an alcoholic and an adulterer in real life, these facts should have been
Hollywood badges of honor, had he stuck to the secular left script. But instead his real life demons
were used to damage him, to destroy him, to assure the left that while he made The Passion of the
Christ it really was just a movie and not the film version of actual history. To the left a flawed tool
cannot make a work of art, the art too must be flawed. And if ever they needed something to be
flawed, it was The Passion of the Christ. For if it was as it was portrayed, then everyone on the left is
going to have an eternity to repent.
From the inside and out, Christianity is under constant assault from the left. It is the Second Deadly
Sin to liberals.
