                                             Mr. Deeds goes to Newsweek

There is a great Gary Cooper classic playing on cable called “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town”.  It’s about
a man who inherits millions and ends up trying to give it away.  Scheming relatives try to have him
committed so they can steal the money.  You know the movie.  Towards the end two little old ladies
from Deed’s home town, Jane and Amy Faulkner, testify that he is “pixilated”- in other words- nuts.
By the end of the hearing you find out that the little old ladies think everyone is “pixilated” except
them.
The reason this movie comes to mind, other than it was just on cable, is that either Jane, or Amy, I’
m not sure which one, just wrote an article for Newsweek under the pen name “Sharon Begley”.  In
this article Ms. Begley states the President is in “denial” about having lost the war in Iraq.  She
smears him with the inability to face up to the fact that America cannot win because the press has
said so.  Just like in the movie she brings in several psychological “experts” to back up her contention
that someone who doesn’t believe in the failure in Iraq, like Ms. Begley, is therefore unbalanced. The
article has liberal psychologists, and liberal journalists, patting themselves on their collective backs
about how the poor President is batty.  I read the article online at the MSNBC web site titled: “The
Truths We Want to Deny”, and it was the highlight of my day.
Ms. Begley, and the people she quotes in the article: Professor Sulkowicz, psychoanalyst Leon
Hoffman, and psychologists Carol Travis and Elliot Aronson, never really offer any comment or
factual information on Iraq.  They don’t talk about facts and issues.  I doubt they know anything
beyond what they read on left wing web sites.  I don’t think they know that of the eighteen provinces
in Iraq, the trouble has been mainly in two.   I doubt they could tell you that the trouble is not a ‘civil
war’ as pushed by the press, but an insurgency instigated and supported by Iran and Syria.  I doubt
they could tell you about the IEDs coming directly from Iranian military bomb makers.  I doubt they
could tell you about the Iranian Revolutionary Guards caught directing the insurgency.  I doubt they
could tell you about the money funneled in from Iran to support the terrorists. I doubt they know, or
care, about the restoration of the Southern marshes, or the building projects giving safe drinking
water and power to towns that have never had them.  I doubt they could tell you about how this
bloodied country finally has the chance for a future. I doubt that they remember the elections where
despite threats of death millions went to the polls to vote for that future.  I don’t think they could tell
you of the ton of yellow cake uranium removed from Iraq by our military. I don’t think they could
tell you the Sunni’s have turned against Al Qaeda and the tribes are rising against the terrorists.
Finally I doubt a single one of the above has the moral character you could fit in the little toe of the
person waiting in line to become an Iraqi policeman or teacher hoping for a better future for their
country after over thirty years of despotism.
No, instead people like these will tell you we are destined to fail.  They will say the opposition is just
too tough.  People like these said we couldn't win the first Gulf War.  We couldn't win in
Afghanistan.  They predicted we couldn't win a second time in Iraq.  They cannot conceive of the
United States ever being right.  They cannot conceive of a United States military as being
competent.  Their forebears said we couldn't beat the British, the Germans (I and II), the Japanese,
the North Koreans, the Chinese, the Vietnamese (We didn't lose. We declared victory and left. Just
like the left wanted then. Just like they want now.), the Russians, etc. They are doing it now with this
garbage.  They say we cannot defeat a foreign led, funded and coordinated terrorism campaign by
two terrorist nation states.  Anyone that doesn't accept this is ‘denying reality’. Their mantra is
failure, and their virtue is weakness.
We can win.  We can do anything we set our minds to.  We have done it before.  If they even had
a passing knowledge of military history they would realize we have done amazing things in Iraq in
such a short time.  Things no other nation on earth could accomplish.  The only thing that can stop
the United States is…the United States.
It is not the President that is pixilated, it is these people.  So, to Jane, or Amy whichever of the two
addled little old ladies that is writing under the pen name of Sharon Begley,  all I can say is that by
you calling the President “pixilated”, you simply let the rest of us know, dear, your delicate
condition.  Mr. Deeds will be by shortly to take you home.
